Mele Rakai graduated with Bachelors in Law Degree in 2007 and completed her Professional Diploma in Legal Practice in the same year from the University of the South Pacific. After admission to the High Court in August 2007, she joined Jamnadas & Associates where she practiced mainly in commercial and family law for more than 4 years.

Mele then moved to the Legal Practitioners Unit where she worked as a Legal officer with the Chief Registrar’s Office which regulates the legal profession in Fiji.

Mele returned to private practice where she joined Sherani & Co in early 2012 as an Associate lawyer where she joined the litigation team practicing a wide range of civil and criminal law. Mele deals with employment law matters and family law matters in the Firm in addition to general practice. Mele specializes in employment, family law, commercial and property law.

 

Apart from practice, Mele is a current council member of the Fiji Law Society and is the Chair of the Continuing Legal Education (CLE) Committee. Prior to joining Council, Mele was part of the Fiji Women Lawyers Association Council serving in various capacities from Secretary, President and Vice President having succeeded colleague, Ms Radhika Naidu formerly of the Firm who succeeded Anuleshni Neelta also from the Firm.

 

Mele is a trustee of the Fiji Women’s Crisis Centre and a board member of Legal Aid Commission & Fiji Girl Guides Association. She is a former board member of the Water Authority of Fiji. Mele also serves as Disciplinary Committee of the local FFA. Mele is passionate about women, children rights and employment law compliance in Fiji. Mele has volunteered with the World Bank Group Doing business research and several charity groups in Fiji, the Hibiscus Events Group, Gender Climate Change Alliance Fiji (GCAF), the Gospel Churches Missions Committee and others. In addition to these, Mele also contributes to her local community and her Vanua.
